Sterling Gibbs is a highly distinguished professional basketball player who has excelled at all levels throughout his career. Sterling has played AAU basketball since age 9 and attributes much of his success to working out daily, basketball camps, and having positive role models to learn from on and off the court. Sterling has played on various highly competitive AAU teams in the Tri-State area, traveling worldwide and even being selected to play for the U-18 USA national team. As a high-school player Sterling became the all-time leading scorer at Seton Hall Prep High School in 2011, (only to be surpassed by his younger brother, TJ Gibbs, in 2016).
On the college level, Sterling was the starting point guard for 2 seasons at Seton Hall University where he was named Sophomore Athlete of the Year, Big East Second Team, All Met Stand Out, MVP of the Paradise Jam Invitational (Scoring a career high & tournament high of 40 points in the Championship Game). While at Seton Hall University, Sterling was one of the top 5 leading scorers in the Big East, and held a top 5 ranking nationally in 3 point percentage. Sterling lead the SHU team on a Big East Tournament run advancing his team to the semifinals for the first time in years, over top seeded Villanova, after scoring a game winning buzzer beater. Sterling graduated from Seton Hall University in 2015, Cum Laude, with a degree in Social and Behavioral Sciences.
After Sterling’s graduation from SHU, Sterling chose to transfer and play his final year of eligibility at the basketball “powerhouse” the University of Connecticut. He was noted by ESPN as the #1 transfer on the market. While at UCONN, Sterling was the starting point guard for all regular and postseason games. He averaged 12.3 points and 3 assists per game. He led his team to win the AAC championship and to the second round of the NCAA tournament where they lost to the University of Kansas. In May of 2016, Sterling graduated from the University of Connecticut with a masters degree in Educational Psychology. He hopes to one day use this degree as a collegiate coach.
Since college, Sterling has gone on to play basketball professionally. He has attended various NBA training camps, played on the Washington Wizards summer league team, and in the NBA G-League for the Windy City Bulls.
Currently Sterling competes in the highest divisions of professional play overseas. He has had stellar seasons in Hungary, Dominican Republic, Russia, Greece, France, and Slovenia. Sterling currently leads the European league, in which he plays, in scoring with 21.6 points per game. Most recently, he led his team to win the 2020 Slovenian Championship.
Through the use of his experiences during his distinguished basketball career, Sterling looks forward to working with players who have the same hopes and dreams that he had as a young player.
Coach Cohen brings the unique balance of decorated player and accomplished coach to youth basketball.
As a player, Cohen was a member of the United States Youth Games Team. From there he continued his career at Montclair Immaculate Conception where he scored over 1200 points, and was a 2 time Star Ledger All Essex County performer, as well as 2 time Colonial Hills Conference Player of the Year. In 2010, Coach Cohen was inducted into the Montclair Immaculate Hall of Fame for his athletic accomplishments.
Following high school, Coach Cohen was a 4 year starter for Division III national power Virginia Wesleyan University. During his collegiate career, Cohen amassed over 350 assists which ranks 3rd All Time for career assists at the University.
For the past 20 years, Cohen has been coaching on both the Boys and Girls Varsity level in New Jersey with stops at the Montclair Kimberley Academy, Cedar Grove, and Livingston High School. In 2012, Cohen guided the Varsity boys basketball team to their first conference championship in 30 years. 3 years later, Coach Cohen led the girls basketball program to their first conference championship in 20 years. Currently Coach Cohen is the head boys basketball coach at Livingston High School.
Coach Cohen’s coaching philosophy focuses on building a foundation of superior confidence through repetition and practice. With confidence and commitment, the sky is the limit. With a track record of success, Coach Cohen implements and preaches all of the characteristics needed for young athletes to succeed.
